| Guidance Notes for Using and Interpreting the GCSE Online Test Service |
| |
| | Before attempting a GCSE style test paper online, you should read these notes to assist you in completing the test and interpreting your result. | |
| |
| | The GCSE style mock exams on our database have been carefully compiled to match as closely as possible the content of a genuine GCSE exam. However there are some differences between these online tests and the written GCSE exam or other mock GCSE exams taken at school or college. | |
| |
| |
| | Some differences between these online tests and a GCSE written test: | |
| |
| |
- The actual exam or usual mock exam requires the provision of an answer which is entered onto the paper whereas the online tests are answered by choosing a correct answer from 5 possible answers, 4 of which are incorrect (multi-choice) including 1 'don't know'. The multi-choice method is used here because the marking is by computer.
- In a written test, for some questions, you may be awarded marks for showing your working out even if your final answer is incorrect. For the online test, you gain marks only when the correct answer is given.
- When you are happy that you have answered all of the questions satisfactorily, click the 'End Test' button located on the final page. Your answers will be marked and an email sent to you containing the test results.
- With the online multi-choice test you would stand a one-in-four chance of selecting a correct answer by guessing. In a real exam this would be a good idea as a last resort. However it is not recommended here (see below).
| |
| |
| | The purpose of these online tests: | |
| |
| |
- To allow students to practise GCSE style questions in order to improve their grade potential.
- Students receive computer-generated hints/tips for those questions not answered correctly.
- Students gain an idea of their grade and this can also be used for the purpose of monitoring their own progress if they re-take a similar test.
- The online test is marked immediately and your feedback is returned quickly.
| | |
| |
| | To maximise learning from the Online Test Service: | |
| |
| |
- Do use pencil and paper to assist you with finding the correct answer. Do keep this 'working out' for future reference, numbering your paper where appropriate.
- Do remember the differences between the Online Test Service and a 'real' exam. Grade boundaries may vary.
- Do regard the Online Test Service as only part of your exam preparation.
- Do observe the instructions for use of calculators.
- Do select the 'Don't know' option instead of guessing an answer. This will give you a better idea of your strengths and weaknesses and allow you to receive all the hints and tips for the questions you did not answer correctly.
